Shuttles from your hometown bring us together at the airport in Toronto, where we board our overnight flight to Reykjavik.
We arrive in Iceland with the day ahead of us to explore the beautiful and friendly capital city of Reykjavik. A local guide joins us to give the history of the most northern capital in the world, and then the day is free to explore on your own in the walkable downtown.
This day tour is a classic introduction to Iceland, showing the majesty of Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir geothermal area (the geyser for which all others are named), and قingvellir National Park, where the continents divide and also holds important civil history for Iceland. We return to Reykjavik for the night.
We begin our circle around Iceland today, heading north into beautiful rural Iceland. Stunning vistas guide us to the lively town of Akureyri, nestled in a dramatic fjord, just a stone’s throw away from the Arctic Circle.
We visit the quaint northen harbour town of Hْsavيk today, where we stop at the fascinating Hْsavيk Whale Museum. This is the premier area for whale watching in Iceland, and we will take an afternoon cruise here, just below the Arctic Circle, to spot the majestic creatures. We then make our way to our home for the next two nights in the Myvatn area.
We spend the morning touring the natural wonders of the area. Lake Myvatn is a mecca for birdwatchers, and a great place to hike and explore. We also visit nearby Hverir, an extremely geothermally active area. Get up close to steaming fumaroles and bubbling mudpools; it feels like being on another planet! This afternoon, relax in the spectacular Myvatn Nature Baths. The steaming lagoon in a beautiful natural setting is nothing short of blissful.
We continue our loop around the island today, making our way into the beautiful and remote Eastfjords. A spectacular drive brings us into the tiny fishing village of Borgarfjِrًur Eystri, home to thousands of puffins, and even the Queen of Elves. Our lovely guesthouse provides beautiful views of the fjord and the ocean north towards the Arctic.
This area is a hiker’s paradise, and we take a half-day guided hike in this dramatic and rugged landscape. The colours of the mountains in this area are absolutely stunning and varied. There are fantastic locations in the town for viewing puffins and kittiwakes up close. They are most active in the early morning and at dusk, so our two-night stay here provides prime opportunity to watch these entertaining and beautiful birds.
We travel down the eastern coast of Iceland today, arriving in Hِfn for the night. This town is situated right on the water in southeastern Iceland, and is known for its local delicacy, lagoustine, very similar to lobster.
As we drive through glacier country this morning, we stop at the hauntingly beautiful Jِkulsلrlَn. This stunning glacier lagoon is constantly changing and never looks the same twice. See the beautiful colours and shapes of the ice up close, and watch for the seals that play there. This afternoon, we strap on crampons for a guided hike onto part of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajِkull. Seeing the incredible formations and streaks of blue and black in the ancient ice is a humbling experience. It is sure to be a highlight! We travel to our lovely rural hotel on the outskirts of the town of Vik for the night.
We explore the spectacular black beach and basalt cliffs of Vik this morning. Seeing waves crash in on the black volcanic sand is like looking at a photo negative, and is an unforgettable sight. Then, we visit beautiful Skogafoss, a spectacular waterfall with the opportunity to hike the trail that extends behind it along the river, with simply breathtaking views. We complete our circle of Iceland today, arriving back in Reykjavik for our final night together at our downtown hotel.
No visit to Iceland is complete without a visit to the famed Blue Lagoon. Spend our last hours in Iceland soaking in the most famous geothermal pool in the world, before we arrive at the airport in Keflavik relaxed and ready for our flight home. We arrive in Toronto where our shuttles are waiting to return us home after our Iceland adventure.
